This AI Predicts the Typical Face and Flag for Each Citizen of Existing and Non-Existing Nations
If I asked you to think of the typical Frenchman, Englishman, or Spanish Woman, you might have some ideas, especially if you are good at observation. You might be able to paint the “citizen” if you have in addition the skills of painting. However, if I were to ask you to paint citizens from Mars how would you go about that? You would probably think of Aliens. We do have some notions about aliens and how they have been portrayed by media but how about the flag?
According to AI, everything makes sense for most countries except for the imagined portraits of Aliens and their contrast to Martians. The Martian man seems more Earthian than his female counterpart that is quite alien in both generated images.
The bias of the AI surely takes more care of man’s image by a male-dominant industry. What is more concerning is the African portraits that look like something out of a museum. Has the AI not seen enough human Africans as opposed to African Art?
Let’s test it on scarcely available data and see if it could show the most minimal bias for human beings without even labeling them to be human. For this experiment, I have asked the AI to show me couples from non-existing and non-imaginable places. I have asked for people from Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tezos. These last three are cryptocurrencies and not places.
The bitcoin might have been picked up by the AI as Mr. Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious founder but it did not make it to the flag, surprisingly. Tezos Citizens seems to be the most Earthian while Etherium Citizens have futuristic aspects. I find that interesting.
The flags remain beyond my ability to interpret. Any thoughts?
